Become a Mentor, Find a Mentor

Share your knowledge with the next generation or nurses. Learn the ropes from an experienced nurse.

Become a Mentor

Nursing and teaching go hand-in-hand. As a nurse, you teach patients and your family and friend. You also teach your colleagues, especially those new to the profession. We feel it’s important for experienced nurses to pass on their knowledge and skills to the next generation. So, we’ve developed a “preceptor” or mentoring program. As an experienced nurse, you will mentor a student nurse, a newly hired nurse or someone who is new to your specialty. You’ll have the opportunity to familiarize her or him with your unit, introduce your colleagues and explain your procedures and protocols. We encourage you to share your personal experiences and help your protege reach his or her goals.

Our nurses also teach and mentor student nurses as part to a creative partnership with local colleges to help alleviate a nationwide shortage of nursing faculty. Because college faculty can only teach a limited number of students while in the hospital, our nurses help more students to experience bedside nursing. As “clinical associates,” our nurses are paid a stipend to teach two students during eight days of “clinicals.” They support and guide students as they care for patients, building lasting relationships.

Find a Mentor

We realize starting a new position in an unfamiliar environment can be challenging, especially if you are new to nursing. To make the transition easier, we have developed a “preceptor” or mentoring program. If you are new to the profession or a specialty, an experienced nurse will be your “preceptor,” your guide. You’ll be introduced to the unit, your new colleagues, as well as procedures and protocols. Often preceptors become mentors, offering more than just clinical guidance. They share their personal experiences and help you reach your personal goals. These are valuable relationships that last for many years.

We Mentor Hospitals, Too

We often receive phone calls from other hospital administrators, asking us, “How do you do it?” They want to know how we attract great nurses who give superior care and create a Magnet environment. They want to know about our programs and how we support staff. They want to know what we do to stand out among other hospitals.

We certainly share our successes. In fact, in 2005, we mentored 78 hospitals, including Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Magee-Women’s Hospital of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Flinders Medical Centre in Southern Australia.
